The International AIDS Society (IAS) welcomes the appointment of Mark R. Dybul as the Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

Friday, 16 November 2012 (Geneva, Switzerland) - The IAS welcomes Mark R. Dybul as the new Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

"This is a pivotal appointment at a crucial time in the HIV epidemic," said Bertrand Audoin, Executive Director of the IAS. 'The Global Fund board made a wise choice in appointing Dr. Dybul as the new Executive Director. With his impressive background in the HIV field and his distinguished leadership as head of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), we believe his new appointment will further strengthen the activities of the Global Fund and its impact as one of the most important actors in the response to HIV. We at the IAS are looking forward to collaborating with him and the Global Fund, as it is only by working together that we will be strong enough to overcome the HIV epidemic."

A medical doctor with a specialty in immunology, Dr. Dybul is former United States Global AIDS Coordinator and previously was a member of the Planning Task Force which led to the establishment of PEPFAR. He is currently co-director of the Global Health Law Program at the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University, where he is also a Distinguished Scholar.

Dr. Dybul has been a strong supporter of the International AIDS Conferences and many of the activities of the IAS. He was a key speaker and chaired a number of sessions at the just ended International AIDS Conference held in DC in July.
