San Francisco is renaming a street in the Mission district to honor a longtime LGBTQ+ activist and co-founder of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Sister Vish-Knew.

District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, who represents the Mission Dolores neighborhood, is proposing a ceremonial name change for Alert Alley, which is off Dolores Street, between 15th and 16th streets. If approved by the Supervisors (sometime in February), the street will receive a second street sign and will be known as Sister Vish-Knew Way.

This street is significant because, on Easter weekend 1979, Vish-Knew and two friends decided to put on nuns' habits a block away from Alert Alley - giving birth to the Sisters, which has grown into a worldwide spiritual, community service, activist, and artist organization offering sanctuary to their communities with houses in 60 U.S. cities and 14 countries.

Vish is a pioneer for LGBTQ rights and a long-time advocate through her work for marginalized and often overlooked members of society; Vish produced the first Midwest Gay Pride Conferences at the University of Iowa in 1974, became the second person in the United States to apply for a same-sex marriage license in 1976, and marched alongside Harvey Milk protesting anti-LGBTQ laws in 1977. Two years later she was among the demonstrators outside of City Hall taking part in the White Night riots protest against the verdict handed down to Dan White for assassinating Milk and then-mayor George Moscone in 1978; she also produced a dog show in the Castro district which was one of the first-ever fundraisers for people with HIV/AIDS.

Since 1979, the Sisters have been staunch activists and fundraisers of millions of dollars for queer and Transgender rights, LBGTQ youth, HIV/AIDS advocacy and education, prison reform, immigration, and the environment.
