Mpox Infectious on Steel Surfaces for Up to 30 Days

Mpox virus can remain infectious on steel surfaces for up to 30 days, but is effectively inactivated by disinfectants containing alcohol, according to recent data.

The study showed that temperature is a major factor in mpox’s continuing infectiousness in the environment for a prolonged time (J Infect Dis 2023;jiad127. doi: 10.1093/infdis/jiad127). At room temperature, the virus can survive on steel surfaces for up to 11 days, and at 39.2° F, mpox can last up to a month.

Although most mpox cases are the result of direct contact, it’s possible to contract the virus through contaminated surfaces.
