The city will be closing four vaccination clinics in downtown Toronto, Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough on Dec. 13, according to a Monday press release. The four fixed-site vaccination clinics began operating in August this year.
The clinics at Cloverdale Mall (250 The East Mall), Metro Hall (214 Wellington St. W.), North York Civic Centre (5100 Yonge St.) and Scarborough (410 Progress Ave., Unit D3) are currently open five days a week noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
According to the city’s news release, the clinics are shutting down as provincial funding for emergency COVID-19 response ends. (Other vaccines provided at the clinics included shots for human papilloma virus, mpox and measles.) The clinics were established to provide “fast, equitable access to vaccines for Toronto residents,” the release said.
This update comes soon after Ontario’s wastewater signal and nationwide hospitalizations for COVID-19 suggested that COVID cases may be the highest for the year at this time.
Toronto Public Health said that it administered a quarter of the 8.8 million COVID-19 vaccine doses given in the city since January 2021 at fixed-site and mobile clinics.
“As we close the final chapter of the last four fixed-site vaccination clinics on December 13, I want to express my gratitude for the community’s commitment,” said Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health.
Mayor Olivia Chow thanked Toronto residents, health-care workers and community partners for participating in “the City’s historic vaccination campaign.”
The city’s release also noted that Dr. de Villa will be proposing a funding plan to the province for $3.8 million to support childhood vaccination programs, disrupted in the COVID-19 era.
