Sept. 17: Film Screening and Discussion: ‘Gert’s Boys’ and HIV Awareness
Past, Present, and Future: HIV,"Gert’s Boys," and the AIDS Memorial Quilt
Join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary "Gert’s Boys," followed by a panel discussion exploring HIV’s ongoing impact on individuals and communities.
Honored with accolades including Festival Favorite and Director’s Choice at the Palm Springs LGBTQ+ Film Festival, as well as the Best Narrative Short Audience Award at the Reel Queer Film Festival, "Gert’s Boys" offers a powerful portrait of resilience, advocacy, and the lived realities of the HIV epidemic.
Following the screening, filmmaker Sara Schwartz; Gert McMullin, an AIDS Memorial Quilt founder featured in the documentary; and HIV/AIDS experts and advocates will participate in a conversation on the film’s themes and the continued importance of HIV awareness. The discussion will address advances in HIV prevention and treatment, persistent stigma, health disparities, and the role of community engagement in supporting people affected by HIV.
The event is hosted by the University of Maryland School of Social Work Daniel Thursz Social Justice Lecture and the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Institute of Human Virology’s AIDS Education & Training Center (AETC).
