UNAIDS at the the African Union Extraordinary Summit in Accra, Ghana, calls for the protection of hard-won AIDS gains and strengthen Africa's global leadership on health

UNAIDS spokespeople, including Executive Director Winnie Byanyima, will be available before and during the Summit in Ghana for media interviews

UNAIDS will be at the African Union Extraordinary Summit in Accra, Ghana between 21–22 July 2026. The Summit will be held under the theme, Advancing Justice, Equity and Universal Health Coverage: Ending AIDS, TB, improving maternal health, addressing endemic non-communicable and neglected tropical diseases and conditions in Africa.

At the Summit, UNAIDS will call on African leaders to strengthen Africa’s global leadership on health sovereignty, protect hard-won gains in ending AIDS and accelerate the implementation of thenewly-adopted Political Declaration on HIV/AIDSto end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

UNAIDS will also urge African leaders to reaffirm their commitment to multilateral cooperation, sustainable domestic and international financing for health, protection of human rights andequitableaccess to lifesaving innovations to protect people’s health.
