May 27, 2011 - VANCOUVER, BC: May 30, 2011, a delegation from the Yunnan Provincial Bureau of
Health, China, is visiting AIDS Vancouver to learn more about HIV/AIDS prevention
and education and to meet with the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS regarding its
groundbreaking strategy of "treatment as prevention."
In addition, this visit will identify achievements of health care in HIV/AIDS.
China has adopted the "treatment as prevention" model pioneered by the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, based at
Vancouver's St. Paul's Hospital. By incorporating highly active antiretroviral therapy, (HAART) into its HIV prevention strategy, China
hopes to reduce the number of new infections and to stabilize the viral load of people living with HIV. In China, there are currently
an estimated 740,000 people living with HIV and 110,000 with AIDS.

Representatives from AIDS Vancouver and BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS will meet with delegates from the Yunnan Provincial
Bureau of Health.
